My humour-hungry and American-television-weary self has just discovered The Mighty Boosh – my new favourite show. The best TV show ever? You be the judge. But it is, so shut up. I downloaded the 2 seasons as I have no cable and it is not available on DVD here, and have been savouring it like a fine dessert. The first series takes place in a zoo where 2 friends, a jazz lover and a goth/glam rocker, work. The adventures are surreal, the animals talk, and there is a pop/rock musical number in every episode. It is interspersed with animation, crazy costumes, pop culture references (Gary Numan, Robert Smith, Brian Ferry etc) and cameos by the likes of Roger Daltrey. The second season centres around their groovy apartment where they now live with the shaman Naboo and the gorilla Bollo. Self-indulgent entertainment and mind-bending work of art wrapped up in one.

My other current favourite show is The IT Crowd which is about 3 lovable losers who work in the basement of a nondescript office building. After the first episode I thought it was just a bit awesome. But the episodes get better and more surreal as it goes. Good lighthearted fun, and the characters are fans of Daniel Clowes, Chris Ware, Tony Millionaire, and Guided By Voices. Need I say more?

Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace is a spoof of a low budget 1980’s hospital drama complete with bad edits, over-acting, cheap effects and runny mascara.

Little Britain is pretty much the funniest show on TV, but I’ve already worked it out of my system… The League of Gentlemen – the precursor to Little Britain – is also worth a gander. It takes place in a quaint English village where evil lurks.

My Family is Britain’s answer to the typical American sit-com, except with a darker, drier edge.
