store of the day

When you’ve lived in a city for a long time, it’s nice to come across something you haven’t seen before. Transilvania Peasant Bread (3474 West Broadway) makes one item — traditional Romanian whole wheat bread baked in a wood-fired oven. The loaves look beautiful, and are super dense with a tough crust (in a good way).

Lori and I have started a weekly collaborative blog as a way of keeping in touch, and to force us to draw something by hand on a regular basis. Nothing fancy, just whatever we fancy.

rowing-the-atlanticThis isn’t my usual reading fare — an inspirational, change-your-life , overcome-all-obstacles type story. But I couldn’t put this down. Roz Savage writes about her 3.4 months crossing the Atlantic in a rowboat (about the distance from Vancouver to Charlottetown). 20 days in, she ruins her own camp stove (resulting in cold, rehydrated meals for the rest of the trip). Midway through, all 4 of her oars are broken. Later she loses all communication with shore. This is a great rainy day page turner that will make you glad you are not bobbing around damp and alone with sores on your bum in the middle of an ocean. And oh yeah, it might even inspire you. Roz was not an athlete or daredevil before she set out. She had a lucrative corporate office job that she hated, and spent her life savings (and divorce settlement) preparing for the race. I’m tempted to pick a team or rower to follow via satellite in the next Woodvale race which starts Dec 6.

I’m currently enjoying Measuring Eternity, The Search for the Beginning of Time. (James is tired after wasting his life uncovering the exact day and time of creation.)
